Some Changes to Financial Aid in 2011
Students all over the United States are trying to get their FAFSA in by their respective state deadlines as they as they try to locate a grant or loan now for next year’s tuition. While you can file the FAFSA up until June 30th of the prior year for the following school year’s financial aid, the truth is you may end up being last in line for monies. To be the first in line, you have to submit the FAFSA well ahead of the state and federal guidelines for deadlines as the system is on a first come/first served basis. Since there are fewer funds and the threat of state’s reducing Pell Grants due to hard times, it pays to be the first in line. Luckily, there are a few changes that will make filing the FAFSA a bit easier this year.
Shorter Application
This year’s application is actually shorter than last year’s application. For students that have to get their parent’s financial information, the shorter form can help to get things done quickly. The user interface for the FAFSA.gov online application has been revamped to make it easy to use and to complete, also.
Import Data
The new form also allows you to import information directly from the tax forms you sent to the IRS. It is not required that you do it this way, but if you want to do it, the option is now available. If you had a lengthy and complicated tax situation, it may be the easiest way to file the form. Otherwise, if you just need to look for your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and a few other items, it may be quicker to visually scan your completed taxes and input the information manually. If you’re not sure how to fill out the FAFSA correctly, you will have more help this year. Local colleges and libraries have numerous volunteers ready to help you fill out this very important document so that you or your student can get the help they need.
