Undergraduate Essay Writing – II
Conduct of the Study
An undergraduate study course, Sociology I at the University of Sydney, was selected as the source of the research data. For their first assignment, students in the course were to choose one from a list of 10 different essay topics, each requiring essays of 2000 words. The topic selected for the research data was ‘What can the concept culture contribute to our understanding of society?’ The topic was selected because the largest group of students selected it. Students had already had input on the topics of society and culture from their lectures and tutorials, and their course textbook (Robinson, 1987) had a chapter on each topic.
All the data were gathered after the students’ essays had been marked and, of the original 25 students who chose this topic, full data were available for 19, who were referred to by number, from 1 to 19.
